- got news that an English explorer has set in fire 30 of Spain's royal warships
- English soldiers had been stealing gold and silver from Spanish ships
- Mary Queen of Scots has just been executed by Elizabeth I.
- He though that the people who killed a Catholic queen should be punished
- The people living in the Spanish Netherlands, rebelled and got help from the English
