- The Confession of Isobel Gowdie - James MacMillan
- Timbre
- Bar 16- Glissando on Viola (G-F#). Creates a wailing tone which fits the melancholic tone of the programme.
- Bar 74- Woodwind and Brass used as full sections for first time. They are loud dynamically and have a harsher timbre; Trombone and Bassoon in particular.
- Bar 73- 'Molto Vibrato' with 'Tutta Forza' which means as loud as possible in the I and II Violins. This has a harsh timbre.
- Bar 98- Slapping of the fingerboard in the Double Bass part. It is unco-ordinated and creates a different timbre, more percussive. This sounds like bats flying and supports the mystery of the programme.
- Tonality and Harmony
- Bars 1-13. Middle C and D- interval of a tone creates dissonance.
- Gradually G, F# and E are added which complete the first 5 notes of the Lydian Scale.
- The Dissonant C and D are held throughout- The I and III Horns alternate with the II and IV Horns to avoid a break in the sound.
- Bar 16 (3rd bar of A)- Dissonance between B in Cello and A on Viola II div. The I Viola plays a wailing glissando between G and F#.
- Bar 25-31. The 'Lux Aterna' in Double Bass part II div. The Lydian Scale with sharpenend 4th (F#).
- Bar 65 (Letter D). The change of tonality with Bb and F natural. (instead of F#).
- Bars 1-13. Middle C and D- interval of a tone creates dissonance.
