- US President Roosevelt died. He was replaced by his vice president Harry Truman.
- Truman was much more suspicious of Communism and Stalin. He thought Stalin intended to take over Europe.

- Stalin's armies were occupying most of Eastern Europe. His troops had liberated many countries from the Nazi's but instead of withdrawing them the troops remained.
- By July, Stalin effectively controlled the Baltic States and had set up a Communist gov. in Poland
- UK and USA protested but Stalin said control of eastern europe was a defensive measure.
- On 16th July 1945, the Americans successfully tested an atomic bomb at a desert site in the USA. At the start of the Potsdam conference Truman informed Stalin of it
