- Cosmological Argument
- Argument from motion
- No infinite regress
- Is this true? Or is this just a limit to our imagination
- In maths there are infinite numbers, like the root of 2
- Is this true? Or is this just a limit to our imagination
- Everything that is moving must have something that made it move
- This would create an infinite regress which some believe is impossible
- No infinite regress
- Is this true? Or is this just a limit to our imagination
- In maths there are infinite numbers, like the root of 2
- Is this true? Or is this just a limit to our imagination
- Therefore there must be a first mover to start the chain
- This is God
- But why is this assumed to be God? It might not be.It makes an inductive leap to God
- This is God
- No infinite regress
- This would create an infinite regress which some believe is impossible
- No infinite regress
- Argument from causation
- Everything has a cause
- Like Dominoes need some force to push them. (Not pizza)
- Nothing can be the cause of itself
- Like Dominoes need some force to push them. (Not pizza)
- Therefore there must be a first cause
- Everything has a cause
- This is God
- Why must it be God?
- Why Can't it go on indefinitely
- Everything has a cause
- Everything has a cause
- Thomas Aquinas' 5 ways
- The design argument
- The world contains order, purpose, regularity and beauty
- By looking at any object containing these properties, we may infer that it was designed.
- The world is an object containing these properties
- So, the world was designed
- implies that said designer also must have created pain and suffering, and so raises questions about their morality
- different people see the pattern and others see chance and coincidence can be based off previous alignment
- So, the world was designed
- The world is an object containing these properties
- By looking at any object containing these properties, we may infer that it was designed.
- Also called the watchmaker argument
- A Posteriori
- Synthetic – meaning it must be tested to be proven
- inductive argument, meaning that its probabilistic, so this happening give a strong indication of this happening
- The world contains order, purpose, regularity and beauty
- The design argument
- Argument from Contingency
- Nothing Has to exist
- So at some it must have not existed
- So at some point, nothing must have existed
- Something must have brought things into existence,
- and that thing must have always existed
- This is God
- Something must have brought things into existence,
- and that thing must have always existed
- This is God
- Inductive leap to God
- Is the concept of a necessary being meaningful, or something humans created
- This is God
- and that thing must have always existed
- Inductive leap to God
- Something must have brought things into existence,
- Is the concept of a necessary being meaningful, or something humans created
- This is God
- and that thing must have always existed
- Something must have brought things into existence,
- So at some point, nothing must have existed
- So at some it must have not existed
- Nothing Has to exist
- A Posteriori - draws on evidence
- The argument cannot explain God, only use God as an explanation
- Postulate – possible explanation that can't be proven
- john hick – more economical to say universe just is
- others think this is the simplest explanation
- Based on medieval knowledge of science
- Can't be completely defeated
- Argument from motion
