- They justified the importation of the slaves because:
- They had a different, non-christian culture, perceived to be uncivilised
- European technology superiority seemed to prove black racial inferiority
- They didn't look like Europeans
- Too few white men to do work, slaves were cheap essential labour
- The American Constitution....
- Treated slavery as acceptable and appropriate
- Reserved considerable powers to state governments
- It guaranteed certain rights to American Citizens
- President Lincoln - what did he do?
- On one hand he wanted to help the slaves by the Emancipation Act in 1863
- However he also didn't want to upset his supporters in the South. Wanted to be like the rest of the world.
