    • Alexander III begins a period of repression as soon as he becomes Tsar - 1881.
    • 1861 - Alexander II introduces the emancipation of the serfs.
      • Serfs had to pay redemption payments for 45 years following the emancipation. The system of 'mirs' that came about stopped industrial growth.
    • 1892 - 'The Great Spurt' led by Alexander III and Sergei Witte. Industrial growth & construction of trans-Siberian railway
    • 1906 - Peter Stolypin uses reform and repression to keep the peasants loyal to the Tsar. He abolishes redemption payments.
    • Peasants make up 80% of the population.
    • 1911 - Stolypin assassinated.
    • 1917 - Nicholas II abdicates.
      • Provisional government takes power of Russia - Prince Lvov leads from February to July when Kerensky takes over and leads from July until October.
    • First duma created in 1906 but only lasts 72 days before dissolution. Second duma created in 1907 but only lasts 3 months. Third duma created in late 1907 and lasts around 4 years. Fourth duma created in 1912 and lasts until 1914.
    • 1905 revolution against Nicholas II.
    • 1904-1905 - Russo-Japanese war. Humiliating defeats for Russia.
    • January 1905 - Bloody Sunday.
    • 1881 - Alexander III makes Russification a major government policy.
    • October manifesto (1905) led to creation of the dumas.
    • 1912 - Lena Goldfield massacre.
    • Jacqueries.
    • 1864 - Alexander II introduces Zemstva.
