- Frontal Rainfall
- As the warmer air is less dense it rises above the cooler air
- This type of rainfall is common in the UK, especially in winter as it is associated with anticyclonic conditions
- When two air masses meet, which have different moisture and temperature properties, air is forced to rise

- Convectional Rainfall
- This type of rainfall is associated with hot weather
- Warm air is forced to rise as it is heated by the ground; the ground is heated by the sun
- Produces tall cumulonimbus clouds that bring thunderstorms; most common in the UK during the summer and during heatwaves
- A warm front is normally where this rainfall occurs from
- Relief Rainfall
- Often associated with a rain shadow
- Happens when moist air is forced to rise over mountains
- Is also known as orographic rainfall and is most common on the western coast of the UK
- A occluded front is normally where this rainfall occurs from
