- UK/US Democracy Comparison
- There has never been a national referendum in the USA, but many of the individual states regularly use direct democracy in the form of initiatives and propositions to allow the people a greater say in decision making.
- Democracy was a fundamental principle in the writing of the US Constitution, although people who drafted it were concerned about a tyranny of the majority.
- For this reason, several anti-democratic measures were introduced to act as a check on the popular will, such as indirectly elected senators, the Electoral College and the Presidential veto.
- There is a much wider range of access points to the political process in the USA than in the UK and this has allowed group activity to play a more prominent role in politics.
- The cost of US elections has also meant that politicians are reliant on donations, meaning the culture of lobbying is more prevalent and well-established.
