- Unit 1: changes in family structure
- PACS (pacte civile de solidarite) became legal in 1999. Since 2017, there has been over 149,000 unions.
- PACS is beneficial as it allows material support, mutual assistance, shared taxes but can be a disadvantage as you have to pay wealth tax.
- Since the 1960s, families have changed from majority married to majority of single parent families.
- There is also a bigger number of recomposed families due to an increase in divorces.
- According to INSEE, cohabitation has risen 16% since the 1960s.
- Couples prefer to cohabitant as they see it as more equal and without the stress of divorce or end of PACS.
- The 2019 Eurobarometr found that 79% of French believed same-sex marriage should be allowed throughout Europe.
- Divorce rate of 52 per 100 marriages.
- Mariage Pour Tous was opposed by conservative Catholics and group Le Manif Pour Tous who say it is against traditional French marriage.
- The French government supported La Loi Taubira as Francois Hollande had promised to legalise same-sex marriage, and Christiane Taubira succeeded.
- In my opinion there is no ideal family as long as people are allowed to live freely, whether in a same-sex marriage or a nuclear family.
- The most serious problems facing French people are the increase of poverty (in both working and unemployed) and domestic violence (which increased 30% during lockdown).
- A larger problem for young people in France is un-employment,which was double that of in the UK in 2014. It is said to be caused by lack of skills.
- Despite changes in family structure, French raise their children the same.
- There is a belief that the child is at the centre of the family as they are seen as the face of the future.
