- Why did the 2nd crusade fail? - Eugenius III and Bernard of Clairvaux
- As Bernard had been the one to convince everyone to go on the crusade many blamed him for its failure
- Unclear aims: The first crusade set out to claim Jerusalem, but what did the 2nd crusade aim to do? It was unclear “save the holy land” and recapture Edessa. This left the leaders to decide the ambition for themselves and led to the poor choice of attacking damascus
- Alternative targets: Resources that shouldv’e been sent to the east were instead aided to the wendish crusade and the reconquista
- Unclear leadership: on the first crusade Urban II sent Adhemar of Le Puy to lead the first crusade however on the 2nd crusade whilst he wasn’t fully accepted he was respected however Louis and Conrad did not present such welcomeness
