  • Why did the League of Nations collapse?
    • Lacked any real powers to oppose powerful nations intent on conflict.
    • The absence of the USA, USSR and Germany for most of the League's life meant that it lacked some of the most powerful countries.
    • The Despression in the '30s forced countries to look to their own interests.
      • This reduced scope for international cooperation and collective security.
    • The actions of militarisitc dictators intent on expanson (such as Nazi Germany) humiliated the League.
    • Even the major powers that did support the League - Britain, France, Italy and Japan - did only out of their own interests and betrayed the League as they saw fit.

    • This reduced scope for international cooperation and collective security.
