Autocratic

Advantages

  • There is no employee involvement in decision making, therefore decisions can be made quickly and strategies can be implemented swiftly when the business is experiencing difficulties.
  • Because it is more of a theory X management style and strict orders are given, having inexperienced staff will not damage the business as they will be micromanaged to ensure success and efficiency.
  • There is usually a strictly hierarchical organisational structure, meaning there is a strong chain of command so there is no confusion in the business and everyone as someone to report and be accountable to.

Disadvantages

  • As employees are ordered around strictly, there is a lack of creativity which could impact the business as it may fall behind competitors.
  • Employees are demotivated and not empowered which can lead to a less efficient business, as it can reduce productivity, which will decrease profits, and therefore decrease the business revenue.
  • As employees have low morale and high frustration, they will be more likely to quit the business which will end up costing the business more as they have to replace these employees and also train them, and this will be a continuous cycle.

Evaluation

An autocratic leadership style is useful in areas where efficiency is a priority, but can be a disadvantage where creativity is needed.
