- He realises that he is useless and nugatory, he accepts it.

- Oldest ranch hand
- He is the 'swamper' who cleans the bunkhouse. Immediately this role lowers his significance and position in the hierarchy.

- Candy stays pretty useless throughout the book.
- He becomes increasingly involved with Lennie and George's idea of getting some land together with rabbits and this fuels the continuation of his back-breaking, tiresome occupation. When Lennie dies, he is furious as this plan is over. This evidently suggests that this future arrangement meant a lot to him.

- Lost his right hand due to an accident at work. This immediately makes him a weak and vulnerable character due to his restricted disability and he is a 'mouse' (referring to the title of mice and men).
- "And at his heels there walked a drag-footed sheep dog, gray of muzzle, and with pale, blind old eyes." - it could be argued that the dog is an exact replica of him, its a metaphor of Candy's character.
