Advantages

  • Gives evidence for both nature, and nurture.
  • Behaviour can be measured over time, showing more consistency, and allow us to understand effects of childhood.
  • has useful practical applications, such as piagets stages with education and when children can learn to conserve with number, mass and volume.

Disadvantages

  • deterministic - behaviour is fixed, from experiences in childhood
  • Longitudinal research can be time consuming, and people may drop out. samples can be small, and hard to generealise from.
  • not all behaviour can be simply be put down to childhood experience.
