Which is more desirable and effective: direct or representative democracy?

Advantages

  • ADVANTAGES OF DIRECT DEMOCRACY
  • It is the purest form of democracy. It is the voice of the people.
  • Decisions made directly by the people will have more authority
  • Decisions made by the people are more difficult to be changed or cancelled by future governments
  • e.g BREXIT
  • Direct democracy can help educate the people about political issues

Disadvantages

  • ADVANTAGES OF REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY
  • Elected reps. may have better judgment than the mass of people
  • Elected reps. may be more rational and not be swayed by emotion
  • Representatives can protect the interests of minorities
  • Elected reps. may be better informed that the general public

Evaluation

In Conclusion, both types of democracies have their flaws. The biggest one being that with direct democracy there will a/the tyranny of the majority. In the Brexit referendum the Vote Leave campaign only won by a margin of 4%... to me this doesn't suggest that the government has a real mandate to leave the European union. The result was so close yet they still won it, another issue with the Brexit referendum was that people were not informed enough to make a decision and there were a lot of lies passed around.... at least with representative democracy we can be reassured to some extent that the MP's now what they are voting for. Their vote would be rational rather than emotional- however there's a chance that MP's vote on a partisan basis which also endangers the legititmacy of the result. A flaw with representative democracy is that sometimes as an MP it could be hard do judge who their duties lie with the party or their constituency.
