Events which lead to the Weimar republic

Causes

  • ww1 meant people were starving and poor especially as in the autumn it was clear that Germany were losing the war
  • The Kiel Mutiny ,3 November 1918 as the sailors mutinied instead of following orders to attack the British Royal Navy.
  • Kaiser Wilhelm abdicated 9th Nov 1918,
  • On 11 November 1918 World War One ended when an armistice was agreed with the Allies (Britain, France and the USA) and Germany surrendered.
  • In January 1919, elections had given the SPD party the most power.  Friedrich Ebert, leader of the SPD became the first democratically chosen President.
  • SDP started to draw up a new constitution for Germany. They met in the town of Weimar as Berlin was deemed too unsafe after the Spartacist uprising earlier in the month.

Effects

  • From November 1918 onwards a series of events occurred which became known as the German Revolution.
  • The sailor’s mutiny sparked rebellions all over Germany and in a matter of days led to the collapse of the German government which as well as the allies saying they wouldn't make peace with G if it didn't become democratic, as well as the industrialisation and the rise of socialism leading to workers rebelling and striking over working conditions which eventually forced the ruling monarch, Kaiser Wilhelm II, to abdicate on 9 November.
  • Friedrich Ebert, leader of the Social Democratic Party as the SPD had a third of the seats in parliament due to the rise in socialism in the end of the 19th C andbecame Chancellor (the equivalent of Prime Minister in Britain) and took power over Germany.
  • Friedrich Ebert, leader of the SPD became the first democratically chosen President. Spartacist uprising from 4 to 15 January 1919.
  • the new constitution was eventually approved and signed in August 1919. This government eventually became known as the ‘Weimar Republic’.

Overall summary

The Weimar Republic came to power through the German revolution which was caused by mutiny in the German navy, industrialisation and the rise of socialism as well as The allies refusing to make peace with Germany unless Germany became democratic which all lead to rebellions throughout Germany which inevitably caused the Kaiser to abdicate in 1919. This then lead to the leader of the SPD Friedrich Ebert to come to power as the SPD had the majority of seats due to the rise of socialism and industrialisation. An election in January 1919 was  then held and Ebert was now the first elected president of Germany and then the SPD drew up a new constitution for Germany which was then approved and signed by the Reichstag in August 1919
