- He is ashamed in front of his father and over dominated by Sofia "She in front a little" "Harpo sitting there with his head down"
- Tries to comply with conventions "Harpo want to know what to do to make Sofia mind" He feels ashamed he hasnt hit her "naw suh, he say. Low, embaress"
- Harpo breaks down and cries on Celie "then fall back on the truth" "When pa tell you something, you do it" tries to find hope in Celies words "yes ma'am?"
- Harpo changes after Sofia leaves "i done learned a few things" he is adamant Sofia isn't going to return "they aint coming back" bitter?
- Harpo is confronted by Celie "If you hadn't tried to rule over Sofia ..." "Harpo look at squeak. Shut up Squeak, he say. It bad luck for women to laugh at men." "(sofia) look at him and laugh in his face" Harpo may be able to control his new wife but still the domination of Sofia doesn't take away his true love "A little spark fly cross the table"
- Harpo begins to learn, him and Sofia are back together, he still tries to oppose her unconventionalism "Women spose to take it easy" but is much more gentle "Harpo say, real soft to Sofia"
- Harpo learns and loves Sofia, when she is speaking of Eleanor Jane quitting working for Sofia he says "Well, you got me behind you, anyway... And i loves every judgment you ever made"
- Harpo is kind to his father, this brings him and Sofia closer once more "Harpo holding his daddy in his arms"
