Advantages

  • Treaty of London 1604 ended war with Spain and improved trade
  • Settled war between Sweden and Denmark in 1614 with Julich-Cleves agreement
  • Married Elizabeth to Frederick V, Elector Palatine, leading protestant in 1613
  • Attempt to balance religious links by negotiating Spanish Match in 1614 which would bring £600,000 dowry

Disadvantages

  • Made links with Henry IV of France to fight against the Spanish in 1609 but reluctant to do so any was not sorry when Henry was assassinated
  • Frederick didn't listen to James' advice after being offered the throne of Bohemia in 1619, Archduke Ferdinand forced to be refugees in 1621 and James force to negotiate how to help them
  • 1622 Spanish Match negotiations re-opened, Charles and Buckingham go to Madrid in 1623, Spanish suspicious and parliament scared they would convert to Catholicism, match failed
  • Charles' marriage to Henrietta Maria caused problems as recusant laws relaxed and she brought Catholic priests with her

Evaluation

Problems with foreign policy were not his fault, did manage to avoid war when Europe was full of it
