Lay Magistrates

Advantages

  • Cheaper as they are not paid
  • Representative as they are chosen to diversify the the bench

Disadvantages

  • Part-time, therefore they are not case hardened
  • Legal advice - they have a clerk available for any legal advice they require - get through cases much slower

Evaluation

In the long run, Judges are better as they can get through cases quicker and are case hardened. Whereas Lay Magistrates cannot get through cases quickly.
