Advantages

positivists favour as it is a form of quantitative data
it is objective, making it reliable and unbiased
allows comparison and analysis
cheap and easily accessabile
representative (based on a large sample size)
publicly available resulting in no ethical issues of consent

Disadvantages

data can be unreliable - produced by state - may have been errors
interpretisists claim they are invalid
marxists argue that it shows the mc in a more favourable light as they are published by a mc government
some statistics can be easily manipulated

Evaluation

Official statistics are useful for evaluating social policies however, they can be manipulated by the mc government to show a sugarcoated version of the actual situation
