Advantages

  • Availability
  • Based on a large social scale - representative
  • Prompts research - starting point
  • Useful background data
  • Easy to draw comparisons - quantitative
  • Reliable - can be repeated and get the same result

Disadvantages

  • Male bias - Feminist say OS are biased against women
  • Political bias - Marxists claim OS are not neutral but reflect ruling class interests and ideology
  • Socially constructed and not the truth - interpretivists

Evaluation

Practical - Government collects statistics from every school in the country, saves time and money and covers a wide range of educational issues, this also makes the statistics extremely representative. The collection of statistics is repeated every year - reliable. Interpretivists challenge the validity of educational statistics - school may manipulate the statistics - to show them in a positive light to keep their funding.
