Poppies vs The Emigree

Similarities

  • Both display the theme of loss- The mother looses her son in Poppies- The woman loose her home life because of conflict.
  • Both emphasise the impact of conflict (war).
  • Both use memory as a way of connecting themselves to war.
  • Both explore love- the woman in The Emigree loved her home country and the mother in Poppies loved her son.

Differences

  • The Emigree uses more positive language, based off her memories of her homeland. Whereas, Poppies uses negative imagery to describe the grief and loss of her son in war.
  • Poppies has a strong, regular structure to mirror how the mother was holding in her emotions. On the other hand,  The Emigree is written in free verse and has no rhyme or regular rhythm. This mirrors the lack of power the woman had.

Overall comparison

Both poems are evident of the theme of loss and the impact of conflict. However, the poems have a contrasting structure; Poppies is strong and regular, whereas, The Emigree is not regular and seems to emphasise the lack of control and stability the woman had about loosing her home.
