President Grants peace policy 1868

Advantages

  • Encouraged white settlement on the Plains- seen a safer once the Indians were removed.
  • Grant replaced any corrupt Indian agents with clergymen believing they would be fairer with the Indians - making it safer on the reservations and more fair for the Indians, better way of life.

Disadvantages

  • Plain Indians being placed onto reservation (destroyed their way of life)- encouraged them to become more like the civilised white settlers- the Indians would be educated, told to wear more American clothing and would be taught how to farm (damaging the sacred land they believed could not be farmed on).
  • Any Indians seen to not be co-operating within the reservations or found to be escaping the US army could attack them.
  • Indians taught how to embrace Christianity
  • if refusal to move onto reservations Indians would be forced onto them by US soldiers

Evaluation

Overall this "peace policy" brought a lot of destruction to the Indians way of life apart from one change within the Indian Agents who cared for the Indians on the reservations.
