Advantages

  • The Dawes plan (1924) cut reperations by half and stabilised Germany's economy. Also the French left the Ruhr.
  • The Lorcano Pact (1925) was a pact between Germany, Britain, France, Belgium and Italy to keep a border with France. Allies removed troops from the Rhineland and then Germany was discussed for entry to the League of Nations.
  • League of Nations (1926) granted Germany a member which gained Germany respect and improved Germany's relationship with the rest of Europe.
  • Kellogg briand pack (1928) was a pact that stopped countries from using War to gain foreign policy. This showed Germany to be a respectable member of the international community.
  • The Young plan (1929) cut reperation payments again and Germany's economy was improving. This also strengthened the Weimar Republic.

Disadvantages

  • The economy depended on American loans and the extremist parties hated Versailles and were furious that Germany were not going to pay reperations.
  • The Young plan aggravated the Extremist parties and soon after Stresemann died of a heart attack. Also, the crisis of October 1929 meant that Germany's economy was hit at rock bottom again.

Evaluation

Stresemann managed to almost save Germany's economy by cutting reperation payments (The Dawes plan 1924 and The Young Plan 1929) and this increased public spending and the overall effect of the German economy. He also improved the relationships that Germany had with other countries (The Lorcano Pact 1925 and the Kellogg Briand pact 1928) and then Germany was a well established country with the rest of the international community. Previously, Germany had a terrible reputation with the rest of the world and therefore, were not trusted but after 1929 they had a much better reputation and relationships with the rest of the world were improved. However, he did increase opposition from Extremist parties and he did make the German Economy dependent on American loans which would be impacted upon after the Wall Street Crash of 1929.

An excellent table plan on this popular exam question, all major successes and failures covered except for an error in the failures 'extremists were furious that Germany WERE going to pay reparations'. In the evaluation the author has made the point that Stresemann solved some of the short term issues but the underlying problems like the Treaty and the economy remained, to flare up again after 1929. Learn this so you feel confident answering this question.
