'The years 1865 to 1896 were a time of significant progress for former slaves in America's southern states. '

Advantages

  • the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments were important legal decisions that gave African-Americans legal rights, from freedom from slavery to the right to vote
  • about 4 million slaves were freed and to help get set up, the Freedman's Bureau in 1865
  • the power of the KKK was weakened. grant prosecuted  a number of members in 1871 South Carolina
  • there were some cultural developments for AA in the South - churches, education

Disadvantages

  • Freedman's Bureau was limited due to lack of funds and southern pressures
  • amendments largely ignored - black codes
  • Democrats make wins in 1877 which stops progress
  • introduction of jim crow laws
  • Plessy v Ferguson 1896

Evaluation

the years 1865 to 1896 were a period of time when African Americans experienced an increase in constitutional rights e.g., voting and education but all progress was severely restrained in the southern states where Jim Crow law, state legislation and racial violence restricted the rights of African Americans
