The Biomedical Approach

Advantages

Biomedical Campaigns reach most people e.g. all women registered with a GP are offered screening for breast cancer.
There are a variety of treatments available.
Prevention is better than cure.
Most people have faith in science and medicine.
Tests and medication work on most people.

Disadvantages

Some people may not understand why they need treatment.
Some treatments are difficult to access e.g. waiting lists.
Some people may ignore offered strategies e.g. smear tests.
Some people may be put off by intrusive methods e.g. immunisations.
Treatments may not fix the root cause of a problem or its long term effects.

Evaluation

Definition: The biomedical approach takes medical action to improve health. This is carried out by doctors or other health professionals with the patient's consent whenever possible e.g. screening and immunisations.
