What were the achievements of the Weimar period?

Advantages

  • Economy: Stresseman was more skilled and had more support than Ebert and was a leading member of every government from 1923-29. He managed the Dawes Plan, meaning reparations had longer to be paid and Germany got 800 million marks in loans. Some money went on pools, housing etc. creating jobs. In 1928 Germany achieved the same levels of production as pre-war levels. Wages for workers rose. Big businesses gained as they controlled about 1/2 of Germany's industrial production. Landowners gained as they could buy smaller plots of lang off people and workers rose and they got sympathy from the Weimar government
  • Politics: There were no more attempted revolutions and parties who contributed to the revolutions in 1918 began to cooperate again.
  • Culture: There was a cultural revival after the Kaisar's strict censorship. The Weimar Constitution allowed free expression of ideas. Artists. musicians all flourished and began to portray reality in Germany, although it was harsh, people enjoyed it. Buildings modernised and exhibitions attracted 1000s, therefore bringing in money. It was the Golden age for German cinema and going to clubs was hugely enjoyed.
  • Foreign Policy: In 1925 signed Locarno Treaties where Germany promised not to change Germany's western borders, so in 1926 Germany joined LON, where Stresseman tried to reverse terms of the TOV. In 1929, Stresseman negotiated the Young Plan where lightening reparations bill was discussed -- lead to B + F troops leaving Rhineland

Disadvantages

  • Economy: Unemployment began to rise. Peasant farmers lost out because in the war they were making more so when it stopped they had too much produce and they couldn't pay mortgages as food demands had decreased. Middle class lost out because their small businesses were losing business due to bigger stores and soon they were being bought out -- these people felt the Weimar government offered them very little
  • Politics: Nazis and communists were building up their parties. There were 4 different chancellors in these years. Around 30% of the vote went against the Republic. Nazis and right wing nationalists - DNVP were working together. Hindenburg was elected in 1926 and he wrote to the Kaiser in exile for approval before taking the post
  • Culture: Culture of the cities seems to represent a moral decline made worse by American immigrants, Jewish artists and musicians. The Wandervogel called for a return to simple country life
  • Foreign policy: Nationalists attacked Stresseman for joining LON and for signing Locarno Pact as it meant Germany accepted the TOV. Communists disliked Locarno, seeing it as a plot against the communist government in the USSR

Evaluation

Germany had become more politically stable as although it had multiple Chancellors, the Nazis were not gaining much more support. Also, the  cultural revelation brought in more tourists and money. Furthermore, although the terms were only short term, Stresseman had achieved some stability which would give him Germany time to think of a long term fix. Finally, although some people were against the foreign policy, it meant Germany was becoming a more respectable country.
