As promised by Marley's ghost, Scrooge is visited as the bell tolls one o'clock by the first of the three spirits: the Ghost Of Christmas Past. the apparition is 'a strange figure' seeming to be both an old man and child.
The ghost appears to Scrooge as white-robed, androgynous figure of the indeterminate age. It has on its head a blazing light, reminiscent of a candle flame and carries a metal cap, made in the shape of a candle extinguisher.
Androgynous: Neither a man nor a woman, has features of both.
