WHAT HAPPENS?
The man says goodbye to his seven year old son who has just died. He says he envies his son because in heaven you don't have to deal with the horrible things that happen in life. Ben Johnson says that his son was his best ever creation. He decides that in the future he won't love anything as much as his son,so that he can't get upset if they die.
TYPES OF LANGUAGE
Pride and Affection: The poet is very fond of his son. The poem is written as though he's talking directly to him. This makes it seem very personal and helps you imagine the poets feelings.
Metaphorical Language: A metaphor about debt and money explains why his son died
Comments about Death: On one hand the poet is sad thats his son is dead but that early death isn't so bad because you don't experience old age or suffering.
