Several significant sections of society are denied equality of opportunity
They faced powerful barriers created by stereotypes and prejudice firmly established in our culture
Parents, teachers and employers were influenced by the ideas and beliefs which linked aptitude with gender, ethnicity, age and physical capacity
Girls, children of some ethnic minorities and the physically disabled grew up with limited expectations of themselves
Barriers can be created by deliberate favouritism on the part of those able to influence the achievements of others
This favouritism may result in sexism, racism and ageism
It may result from more complicated attitudes and beliefs about what roles are appropriate for women, people in ethnic minorities or old people
Unsympathetically designed buildings and lack of facilities make it difficult, if not impossible for people with disabilities to develop their potential through education and at work
