Book 5

Summary

  • Gods discuss Odysseus' fate on Mt Olympus
  • Hermes is sent to Calypso's island
  • He tells her that Odysseus must be set free so he can return home
  • Calypso complains about the double standards of the gods as they are allowed to keep mortal lovers but she is not
  • Calypso, however, agrees and helps Odysseus build the boat
  • She supplies him with provisions from her own island: An axe, water and wine
  • She bades him farewell
  • After eighteen days without sleep, Odysseus spots Scheria
  • Poseidon, still holding his grudge, spots Odysseus and conjures up a storm
  • He is almost shipwrecked and dragged out to sea, but Athene saves him
  • The goddess Ino also helps; she gives him a veil and tells him to take his clothes off and leave his ship
  • After hesitation he complies
  • He is almost dragged out to sea again, but the god of the river hears his prayers and opens a path onto the island for Odysseus
  • He immediately takes off and throws back the veil as Ino requested.
