REASONS FOR LABOURS VICTORY 1945

  • labour had performed extordainarily well
  • 1945 gained 10% more of the vote,increased it's support by 3.5 million and won 393 seats. 
  • had an attractive image
  • 1945 imbalance in the electoral system had worked in Labour's favour
  • Labours war time ministers had gained respect of the electorarte.

CONSERVATIVES HANDICAPS

  • Had not understood the needs of ordinary people.
  • Churchills inhability to carry out his wartime popularity into peacetime. He was unable to convince the British people that he could be relied upon as a domestic politian. 
  • Inhability of Conservative polititans to manage the economy
  • Appeasement policy failed to prevent the war occuring.
  • The conservative goverments ill judged and unconvincing campaign.

HUGH DALTON

  • Minister of Economic Warfare
  • Presisent of the Board of Trade under Churchill.
  • Had to resign as Chancellor of the Exchequer after incautiously leaking some of his budget plans.

ANEURIN BEVAN

  • Dominant figure on the Left of the Labour Party in Atlees time
  • His greatest achievement was creation of the NHS which came into operation in 1948.
  • He was defeated for the leadership of the party after Atlees retirement by Hugh Gaitskell
