Atoms are the small pieces that build all matter, dead or alive. We use atoms and models of atoms to explain how materials are made. These explanations have altered and varied over time, to create the understanding we have today.
Atoms are made up of three things, protons, neutrons and electrons.
An atom is made up of a nucleus surrounded by electrons.
- The nucleus caries a positive charge.
- The surrounding electrons each carry a negative charge.
- There are the same number of positive charges in an atoms nucleus as there are negatively charged electrons around it, this means an atom is neutral.
If you look at the periodic table you will see that each atom, or element, has an atomic number.
