What is bowel cancer?

Bowel cancer is a cancer that begins in the large bowel. Depending on where the cancer starts, bowel cancer is sometimes called colon cancer or rectal cancer.

What are the causes of bowel cancer?

Cancer occurs when the cells in a certain area of your body divide and multiply too rapidly. This produces a lump of tissue known as a tumour.

also family history, diet, age, smoking, alcohol, obesity, inactivtiy, digestive disorders and genetic conditions are risk factors.

Symptoms of bowel cancer

  • blood in your stools (faeces) or bleeding from your rectum
  • a change to your normal bowel habits that persists for more than three weeks, such asdiarrhoeaconstipation or passing stools more frequently than usual
  • abdominal pain 
  • unexplained weight loss

symptoms of anaemia include:

  • fatigue
  • breathlessnesss

In some cases, bowel cancer can cause an obstruction in the bowel. Symptoms of a bowel obstruction include:

  • a feeling of bloating, usually around the belly button
  • abdominal pain
  • constipation
  • vomiting
