Heart sounds

1st Sound 'lub' S1 = closure of the mitral and tricuspid valves     

2nd Sound 'dub' S2 = closure of aortic and pulmonary valves

Accentuation Manouvers

A - listen with bell a left lateral decubitus position (pateint lying on left side)

B - listen with the diaphragm at left sternal border and apex with patient leaning forward and after expiration ("please sit up, lean forward, breathe out and hold your breath")

Listen out for extra sounds:

  • 3rd heart sound = lub dub dum
  • 4th heart sound = da lub dub

(could indicate hypertension/aortic stenosis/cardiomyopathy)
