Drivers are feed 60 pounds to 180 for non payment. Cabs and bus's are free, and residents are cheaper.

the successes -  43% reduced from 2002- bike use went up 80%, Auto pay- dont need to stop and pay. 150,000,000 million a year profit. pullution down by 16%. Congestion fell by 30% in the first years. less injuries occured. predicted failures didnt happen e.g. congestion else where didn't happen.

Outline deals for community strategies

NDC strategy was launched by the labour government in 1999 to help struggling inner city areas.

Three aims

Health and regeneration - 400,000 people setting up Aston Pride community Health Centre.

Employment and business - young children entering the work world through work experience program and dedicated guidance team. Broadband centres have been set up to give local people internet access.

Reason for decline - it used to be a big manufactoring centre but by the 1980s the traditional industry had gone.  The factories couldnt compete with cheaper goods from abroad so they had to close down. Big effect on local economy and CBD.

Three ways Birmingham improved CBD - 

Bullring shopping centre.  Redeveloping was vital to bring CBD back to life.  It reopened in 2003 with over 100 major shops in it eg flagship Selfridges.  The focus on the design of it making it look more attractive to investment and visitors.

Brindley Place

Area of old warehouses by canal.  £400,000,000 pounds to convert it.  Now smart modern pedestrian zone of upmarket apartments - offices, hotel, restaurants etc.

Traditional shopping streets

In the city pedestrianised.  Buildings in jewellery quarter restored now attractive for tourists.
