Hazards

  • Irritant- eg dilute acids - make skin red and itchy
  • Harmful - eg manganese dioxide - makes you sick
  • Flammable - eg Aliminuim powder - catches alight easily
  • Corrosive - Concentrated Acids - Burn you skin
  • Toxic - eg Sodium Chromate (V) - Can do serious harm
  • Oxidising - Potassium manganate (VII) Provides oxygen to a fire

Heating Copper Carbonate

Observations:

  • Colour/Heat change
  • Turned to fine powder
  • Spitting/Fizzing
  • Condensation on tube at first

Explanation:

  • Condensation due to cold boiling tube + water produced by burning of gas
  • Fizzing - carbonates produce CO2
  • Turned from green to black - new substance formed

CuCO3(s) -> CO2(g) + CuO(s) - copper carbonate -> carbon dioxide + copper oxide

A THERMAL DECOMPOSITION - MOST CARBONATES WILL DO THIS

Precipitate Reactions

A PRECIPITATE REACTION IS A SOLID THAT IS PRODUCED DURING ON A REACTION

aka ppt

Using ppts to identify a substance

  • Sulfates- + Barium Chloride => white ppt
  • Carbonates - + Acid and test with lime water => white ppt
