Background

• It analyses samples of a substance and finds the relative mass and the abundances of them in the sample, from this we can work out what elements are in the sample

The 5 stages.

For the mass spectrometer to work the sample must go through 5 stages

• Vaporise
• Ionise 
• Accelerate
• Deflect
• Detect
