Waltz

Began- 1790s

Where- Austria- Vienne

Composers- Strauss, Tchaikovsky

Features:

  • Three beats in a bar (oom pa pa- the oom is stronger than the pa)
  • Mostly goes in robato (Goes fast then slow then fast then slow)
  • The chords in Waltz were never complex. They lasted for at least bar and sometimes two or four.

Dance steps:

  • It's a couple dance
  • The man leads
  • They do footsteps that matches the beat and they go around in circles

Salsa

Began- 1960s- 1970s

Where- Spain

Composer- Willie Colon, Celia Cruz

Features:

  • It has a basic rhythm called the Clave
  • Has 4 beats in a bar
  • You can recongnise Salsa from the cheery major key and a range of instruments including the Saxophone, trumpets, bongos, piano, guitar, maracas and a guiro.

Dance steps:

  • It's a partner dance
  • They dance on the spot rather than moving round the room
  • It takes 8 beats for one complete cycle of the dance moves

Tango

Began- 1850s

Where- Argentina and Uruguay

Composer- Astor Piazzolla

Features:

  • 4 Beats in a bar
  • There's a rhythm called the Hanabera
  • It uses the Tonic and Dominant to make it up.

Dance Steps:

  • It's a couple dance
  • The man leads
  • They dance to the beat

American Line Dance

Began- 1920s

Where- America

Composer- Billy Ray Cyrus, Dolly Parton

Features:

  • 4 Beats in a bar
  • It's fast

Dance steps:

  • There's an instructor who tells the steps
  • People can get into a line or square

Irish Jig

Began- 1950s

Where- Ireland

Features:

  • Very lively and fast
  • They are in 6/8

Dance Steps:

  • Dance with hard of soft shoes
  • They put there arms by the side and they do a lot of foot movement
  • They move around quite a lot around there space and they don't stand in one place.

Irish Reel

Began- 1700s

Where- Ireland

Features:

  • They are in 4/4
  • They have accents on the first and third beats of the bar
  • The tunes are often made up of straight quavers not dotted

Dance Steps:

  • Dance with hard of soft shoes
  • They put there arms by the side and they do a lot of foot movement
  • They move around quite a lot around there space and they don't stand in one place.

Features:

  • 4 beats in a bar
  • Often have dotted rhythms
  • Slower than the reel

Dance Steps:

  • People must have hard shoe to dance.

  • Can mostly hear an instrument called the Dhol
  • Has a Bhangra rhythm called the Chaal
  • The language of the music

Dance steps:

  • They move there hands just like the way they're turning a light bulb

Where- UK/ USA

Composers- Bee gee's (band), Jerry Butler, Janet Jackson

Features:

  • 4 beats in a bar
  • Strong accent on the 2nd and 4th beats of the bar
  • Disco music often made use of riffs (repeated patterns of notes) on the bass guitar, guitar or keyboards.

Disco Steps:

  • It's Freestyle
  • The Hustle

Features:

  • Lots of use of technology
  • No Singers
  • Lots of loops
