Different types of topology

• a single cable is the backbone of the network
• connects each computer to scanners, printers, server and router. 

Advantages:

• cheap to install as only one wire
• suitable for small networks only

Disadvantages:

• performance becomes slower if more computers are added
• if the cable fails, so does the whole system
• the length of the cable restricts the amount of devices that are able to connect

• each device is connected to two neighbouring devices
• messages passed around in the same direction
• often found in schools and offices

• the messages are passed through devices so no central server is needed

Disadvantages:

• failure of any cable can crash the whole network
• can be slow if lots of data is needed to be transferred
• alterations may impact the whole performance

• has a central hub which each device connects to
• used in homes
• require more cable

Advantages:

• can easily make alterations without causing a failure
• isolation of each device in network

Disadvantages:

• relies on central hub so if that fails so does the whole system
• many cables required

• every component is connected to every other piece to transfer data

Advantages:

• if a node fails, the system will still work but slightly less efficiently
• very fast

Disadvantages:

• it requires lots of wires so it is expensive
