Direct Democracy
Definition: form of democracy based on direct, unmediated and continuous participation of citizens in the tasks of government. It destroys the distiction between government and the people - a system of popular self-government.
It was first observed in Classical Greece when Athenian citizens (mainly men over 20), and the Paris Commune Meeting (1871) goverened themselves through mass meetings, and decisions were made on a majority vote.
Key Principles:
- direct - i.e. the people make policy decisions
- unmediated - the people are the politicians
- continuous - people engage with politics frequently
