The Orgins of Jazz-The music originally came at the start of 20th century from mostly African-American roots. 

Ragtime

At turn of century- ragtime v popular musical style. Piano became increasingly popular in American homes. Has strict on-the-beat rhythm in left hand jumping low-middle range chords alongside syncopated melody lines playing high up in register by the right hand. Prob most famous ragtime composer- Scott Joplin (1868-1917) composed famous Maple Leaf Rag (1897)  andThe Entertainer (1902). Where jazz style of New Orleans jazz came from.
