Consequences and problems of over fishing

  • Fishes are in high demand for China mainly, 30,000 tons of reef fish each year
  • Humphead rash and giant ruper are in demand in China. They are taken out of the ocean far to young so they can't reproduce and carry on their genes. Not many left because of over fishing.
  • They are in fish population decrease.
  • Because of over fishing, coral reefs and the fish living there are dying. Fisherman travel 3,000 miles to find fish.

GLOBAL ISSUE

  • Acidic oceans
  • Global warming
  • Green house gasses
  • Rise in sea levels
  • Bleaching coral
  • Warmer seas and killing reefs

DIRECT ISSUES

  • Unsustainable fishing
  • Harvesting coral for jewellry
  • Construction on top of coral reefs
  • Lack of tourism
  • Lack of trade
  • Logging on coast line

Mangroves

A GROUP OF TREES AND SHRUBS THAT LIVE IN THE COASTAL INTERTIDAL ZONE

Grow in areas of:

  • Low oxogen soil
  • Slow moving waters - fine sediment accumulates - 16 degree oceans
  • Tropical and subtropical latitudes near equator

They STABALISE the coastline reducing EROSION from strom surges, currents, waves and tides. They ATTRACT fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter.

Threats of mangroves

  • They can extract fresh water from the sea water - filter 90% salt water
  • 75% all fish are born in mangroves
  • The four main threats of mangroves are CLEARING, HARVESTING, RIVER CHANGES, POLLUTION, CLIMATE CHANGE

Benefits of mangroves are :

  • Water filtration
  • Prevention of coastal erosion
  • Storm protection on coasts
  • Carbon storage
  • Food
  • Timber
  • Biodiversity protection

Sea turtles and crust oceans are highly endangered and protected by mangroves
