Interference

Forgetting because one memory blocks another, one or both memories are distored or forgotten.

Mainly used as an explanation for forgetting in LTM.

When a old memory affects a newer memory.

(the degree of forgetting is greater when the memories are more similar)

A newer memory affects an old memory.

(the degree of forgetting is greater when the memories are similar)

Procedure- study of retroactive interference

• Changed the amount of similarity of the control set of material and the set the ppts learn after.
• ppts had to remember the control set 100% first

Sets of words: synonyms, atonyms, unrelated adjectives, numbers, nonsense syllables, no change

Findings-

when ppts recalled the original set, the better performance depended on the nature of the second set. Worst performance- synonyms

Conclusion-

This shows that interfernce is stronger when the memories are similar
