Acids

Have a low PH balance, below 7.                                                                                                                               Acids taste sour                                                                                                   Acids kill some cells-living cells such as skin or bacteria.                                     Acids can be corrosive.                                                                                     They are neutralised by bases, and the products of this reaction are salt and water. (Na+H20).    Acid+Akali=Na+H20.                                                                  Acids make hydrogen, when they react with soem metals.                                 Acids make carbondoixide when they react with metal carbonates.  Acids have hydrogen in them and the word ACID in the name.

Akalis

Akalis have a high PH. over 7.                                                                         They feel soapy and slimy.                                                                                   Akalis can be corrosive, and burn skin worse than acids as they are often hard to wash off.                                                                                              They neutralise acids to make salt+water.                                                     They are soluble bases, they disappear in water to create alkaline solutions. They are usally metal oxides, hydroxides or carbonates.

Reaction of metals

The Reactivity series was put together by doing a bit of pratically science. You need to know how all these metals react with 1)Air   2)Water   3)Dilute Acid     4)Each other.

Reaction with Air...    METAL+OXYGEN=METAL OXIDE                                        1)Most metals will tarnish after a while in air. 2)This is a reaction with the oxygen in the air. It makes a dull layer of metal oxide on the surface. 3)Th
