Pregnant women are advised not to drink, men are meant to drink 2-3 units a day and 21 units a week and at least 2 days free a week. Women are meant to drink 2-3 units a day, 14 units a week and at least 2 days free a week.

Have to be 18 to buy alcohol in the UK unless you are accompanied by an adult to drink alcohol with a meal in a licensed public place.

Underage drinking happens as a result of - peer pressure, low prices, alcohol being readily available and parents or older friends buying it.  

Binge drinking is drinking heavily in a short space of time, to feel the effects of alcohol more. Binge drinking is more than double the daily recommended units in one session.

Alcohol dependence

This is a physical and mental need to drink alcohol and the inability to stop. It is a chronic and progressive disease. 

Alcohol is highly addictive.

Alcohol dependence can- result in cravings for alcohol, cause withdrawal symptoms if you stop, have physical, social and emotional effects, have long term health risks, result in premature death.

Effects of Alcohol

Physical effects- Long-term and short-term health risks, accidents or injuries resulting from impaired judgments, unsafe sexual practice.

Emotional, social and intellectual effects- Alcohol dependence, Mental health/social issues such as; anxiety, depression, irritability, and relationship problems.

Health benefits- small quantities can decrease the risk of dementia, can help prevent colds, may lower risk of diabetes, may reduce the risks of gallstones, can lower cardiovascular disease.

Health risks- excessive alcohol consumption; infertility, weight gain, liver disease/failure, mental health issues, brain damage, addiction, stroke, heart disease, intestinal ulcers, osteoporosis. 

Short term effects- Vomiting, loss of sensory perception and blackouts

Recreational Drug Use

1) Medicinal drugs- drugs taken to control disease or pain. Prescribed by a doctor or bought over the counter under the controlled conditions. Addictive if not controlled under conditions.

2) Recreational drugs- drugs that can be taken for pleasure illegal e.g heroin, cannabis, cocaine or legal e.g tobacoo, alcohol and caffeine. Can be addictive.

Can be addictive, as a person becomes more addicted, their consumption goes up to try to get the same effect. 

It is against the law to take, possess or supply recreational drugs

Possible effects of drugs- physical; accidental death, illness and disease e.g liver damage, HIV, hepatitis (sharing needles/syringes), Impaired judgment leading to accidental, injury or unsafe sexual practices. 

Emotional and social- dependence, effects on mental health, loss of job and financial problems.
