Managing Climate Change

- Carbon capture and storage (CCS) reduces emisions from fossil fuels

- CCS captures CO2 and stores it deep underground

- It's very expensive but effective

- Trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and emit oxygen

- The Kyoto Protocol, signed in 1997 by most countries was set up to monitor and reducethe amount of greenhouse gases emitted 

- The EU has now agreed to cut emissions by 20% from their 1990 levels by 202

- Disidvantages are that its a tough policy to implement, not enough countries participate and skeptics still dont agree

- Replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy reduce greenhouse gas emissions

- More offshore wind farms and nuclear power plants are being built

- Its very expensive

- Planting new crop types that are more suitable to the new climate

- Biotechnology producing new crop varieties which are more resistant to extreme weather e.g drought resistant millet growing in Kenya

- Water meters can discourage families to use alot of water

- Rainwater can be collected and recylced 

- Physical defences e.g flood barriers are being built e.g the Thames Barrier

- In poorer areas, people are building houses on stilts to prevent flooding
