A combined approach uses both physiological and self-report data to give us the objectivity of scientific measures and rich qual data which helps us explain the reasons for behaviours such as stress.
Johansson:
Used a combined approach. He got his participants to give a daily urine sample at various points in the day. This was to measure the levels of stress related hormones. Self-reports were also used to test their mood, alertness and caffeine/nicotine consumption.
Baseline readings were taken at home before the study started. Records of stress realted illness and absenteeism were also kept.
Conclusion: It can be found that taking a combined approach is successful in measuring stress as it gives us various data to compare.
