Physiological Approach (2)

Sperry/Maguire: Similarities: They both looked at brain structures. For example, Sperry looked at split-brain patients who had undergone hemisphere deconnection, and Maguire looked at how taxi-driver's hippocampus' are different to non-taxi drivers. Differences: Maguire used much more impressive equipment, whereas Sperry used crude equipment. For example, Maguire used an MRI to look at the brain structures of the hippocampus' in taxi/non-taxi drivers brain's whereas Sperry used an adaptive slide projector to present the visual aid's to the split brain participants. Sperry/Dement&Kleitman: Similarities: They both used small sample sizes in their studies. For example, in Dement and Kleitman's study it only included 2 females so we could argue that th results were biased towards the dream patterm of men rather than women. Similarly, Sperry used only 11 participants, however, Sperry didn't really have any control over this as their aren't many split-brain patients available to study, Differences: Sperry used a quasi-experiment as his IV was naturally occuring i.e. participants had undergone hemisphere deconnection or not whereas D&K used a lab experiment which was highly controlled i.e. they asked the p's to avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of the study. Maguire/Dement&Kleitman: Similarities: They both used highly specialised highly lab equipment. For example, Maguire used MRI scans which collects data about the structure or anatomy of the brain. Similarly, D&K used EEG scans to amplify and record the signals of electrodes attached to the participants faces and scalps, and 2 or more electrodes near the eyes to record a change in eye movements. Differences: Maguire was looking at brain structure and the size of the hippocampus in taxi/non-taxi drivers. Whereas, D&K was looking at brain waves when we sleep.
