Popular Politics & Control

  • 1832 "Great" Reform Act (Larger Franchise from 7% to 11% 1834, however only males voted, monarchical and lords remained undiminished. Overall very small change).
  • Penal and Policing Reforms: Metropolitan Police Act, Gaols Act - Designed to protect people and standardise the justice system (degree of more control however was a lot more efficient).
  • Catholic Emancipation 1829 - Brought about by popular pressure (threat of civil war). Massive restriction for future Catholic voters in Ireland.

Dealing with revolutionaries

  • Repeated suspension of Habeas Corpus (Deterrent and show of control)
  • The Seditious Meetings Act 1819
  • Six Acts 1819 (Stopped any radical reformers creating large protests like that of the Peterloo Massacre
  • Clontarff Monster Meeting (O'Connell imprisoned on grounds of seditious conspiracy after it was called off due to British troops coming over in two ships sent by Peel).
  • Propaganda and Jingoism: Peterloo Massacre, Cato Street, Spa Fields, Luddites, Blanketeers.
